Volunteer Description

 

 

Position:  Activities Volunteer

 

Purpose: To implement youth curriculum with participants involved in after school programs, summer camps, or youth focus groups. My Brother’s & Sister’s Restoration enables youth to change their lives and redefine their futures through life skill development, educational programs, academic assistance, and service learning.

Duties & Responsibilities:

· Works with an assigned group of youth to provide academic assistance or implement program curriculum.

 

· Assists youth in developing a better understanding of homework assignments or program activities.

 

· Reviews completed assignments and suggests ways to improve or supplement assignments.

 

· Provides positive feedback on the youth’s progress and encourages youth’s continued participation in MYBSR programs.

 

· Serves as a mentor and/ or role model to youth involved in program.

 

· Arrive at program site promptly and prepared

 

· Notifies program staff if unable to attend program site.

 

· Maintains a positive attitude and the confidentiality of youth involved in program.

 

Accountable To: Executive Director

 

Time Commitment: The Activities-Volunteer position requires a minimum commitment of one hour, and no more than four hours per week, for each week that after school programs, summer camps, or a youth focus groups are in session. In addition, each volunteer must attend a two-hour orientation the week before programming begins.

 

 

Length of Appointment: 6 months to 1 year

 

Qualifications:

· Adults 18 years of age or older who are able to pass a criminal background check and have earned a high

school diploma, associates degree, bachelor’s degree, or higher.

 

· Interest in developing a relationship with teenagers

 

· Patience and a sense of humor.

 

· Willingness to follow directions given by  MYBSR staff

 

· Sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic differences

 

· Comfortable with going into diverse neighborhoods.

 

Support Provided:

Training for this position will be provided at the two hour orientation session. In addition, the Executive Director is available on an ongoing basis to answer questions and provide other assistance as needed.
